The recommended method for cleaning and disinfecting combs and brushes is to soak them in an EPA-registered disinfectant. This method ensures thorough disinfection by allowing the disinfectant to penetrate and kill any pathogens present on the combs or brushes. Soaking in a disinfectant solution is effective because it not only cleans but also sanitizes the tools, making them safe for subsequent use on clients.

Using an EPA-registered disinfectant is crucial because these products are proven to be effective against a wide range of bacteria, viruses, and fungi, complying with the standards set for safety and efficacy. This level of thoroughness is vital in maintaining hygiene in a barbering environment, where tools frequently come into contact with hair, skin, and various contaminants.

While other methods like wiping with a cloth or using alcohol wipes can remove surface dirt and debris, they do not guarantee a level of disinfection that soaking provides. Rinsing with hot water may clean tools to some extent, but it is insufficient for proper disinfection. Thus, soaking in an EPA-registered disinfectant is the best practice for maintaining safe and hygienic combs and brushes.
